ABOUT US

Introduction:
There were very few Nepalese people living in the UK before 2005. The numbers started to increase after the historical announcement by the Government in Oct 2004 allowing post 97 Gurkhas to settle in the UK.  But the influx of retired Gurkhas population really increased rapidly when the Government announced in May 2009 that all Pre-97 retired Gurkhas who had served for 4 years or more from 1948 to July 1997 could settle in the UK.
Since the arrival of retired Gurkhas and their families in the UK from Gorkha District in Nepal, some have faced and experienced quite dire situations that have included grief and bereavement of family members. The solidarity shown by thepeople of Gorkha District in the UK to help those in such dire predicaments was not only inspiring but also praise worthy. This outpouring of kindness and solidarity just through normal communication channel made every one think – what if we established an organisation that would help us to organise such events more efficiently and effectively and look after the welfare of our members. Thus an idea was formed to establish an organisation that would specifically look after welfare of Gurungs from the district of Gorkha
The seed for the formation of Gorkha Zilla’s Gurungsorganization was finally planted on 29 March 2008 under the Chairmanship of Mr Tham Parsad Gurung with the unanimousdecisions of all attendeesThe organisation’s primary aim being to provide moral and financial support to its members who may fall into severe difficulties. It was also decided that we should aim to preserve our culture and heritage to pass it on to our posterity.
The organisation was eventually named “Gorkha Zilla Gurung Samaj UK” to reflect our origin in Nepal. Furthermore, the organisation has also aimed to support underprivileged people of the UK and abroad in times of dire predicamentsThe organisation shall be an independent non-profitable, non-political and non-religious organisation. It shall aim to cooperate with other similar social and charitable organisations in the UK and abroad to further enhance its role.
