COORDINATOR’S NOTE

Welcome to the third edition of the Daraudi Thames Magazine

I do hope everyone enjoyed the World Cup, the most entertaining football tournament in the world. Who could have predicted that five times world champion, Brazil, would be so humiliated in the quarter finals in their own home country as the World Cup host. Looking at the games, I felt Germany deserved to win and I hope you concur with me.  How quickly time flies and we have almost come to the end of the year.

Once again, I would like to express my warm gratitude to everyone for giving me the opportunity to serve our distinctive and vibrant Samaj. 

I am also grateful to Capt (Retd) Gary Ghale - Editorial English/advisor, Advocate Raju Gurung , Lt(Retd)Tham Parsad  Gurung - Coordinator/Founder Chairman/Advisor, all the sponsors, writers, and everyone who have helped directly/indirectly  to produce the  3rd edition of our Daraudi Thames annual magazine. 

Our Samaj is an independent, apolitical and non- religious social organisation. The Samaj is now in its 7th year since its inception with the aim of preserving our culture /tradition and to provide welfare and morale support to those who may unfortunately fall into financial and welfare difficulties. We have been celebrating our Lhosar festival with great zest every year and have also been enjoying other auspicious

GENERAL SECRETARY’S NOTE

This is my second term in office as a member of the Executive Committee but my first term as the General Secretary of our Samaj. I am very proud and honoured to hold this post to serve our proud Samaj.  Just as I presented in our Lhosar and AGM, I am presenting a brief statement of our Samaj from April 2012 to December 2014 in this annual magazine.

SAMAJ BACKGROUND

Before 2004 there were only few Gorkha Zilla ‘gurungs’ living in the United Kingdom but the Home Office historical announcement in October 2004 and in May 2009 allowing all retired Gurkha who served for four years or more from 1948 onwards along with their families has seen a huge surge of ex-Gurkhas in the UK. This has obviously increased our zilla population as well and this has necessitated us to establish a Samaj to provide welfare and morale
