As you all know, the world has been truly shocked by the rapid spread of this dreadful COVID-19 disease. It has had a profound effect on the livelihood of billions of people around the world. Many have lost their livelihoods through job losses as businesses and factories have closed and staff have been

made redundant to streamline and sustain their business. The pandemic has also severely disrupted the food supply chain especially in poorer countries and many are going hungry. Due to the restrictions and lockdown imposed, many people are now suffering from loneliness and social isolation. The world has not yet faced this kind of pandemic before.

With its ability to mutate, we now have different variants infecting people around the world: Alpha – UK,

Kent variant, Beta - South Africa variant, Gamma – Brazil variant and Delta – Indian variant.  With the Delta variant spreading like wildfire across India infecting thousands of people and causing thousands of fatalities each day, it is no surprise that it has now entered Nepal and is spreading rapidly across the country brought about by our own people returning to their home country since India went into lockdown. With no government provisions to check people at the porous borders with India, these returnees have been unknowingly spreading the virus in their respective community areas. From the main cities, the virus has now been rapidly spreading in the rural areas including remote villages. This is now the dominant variant in Nepal that is infecting thousands of people and sadly many have succumbed to this terrible disease. The pandemic is causing havoc in a country that has been ill prepared for this kind of disaster. One good thing is that the Nepal government swiftly imposed another lockdown to control the virus implementing strict social distancing rules, frequent hand washing and wearing of face mask. By the end of April 2021, more confirmed cases and more deaths have been reported in Nepal.

Health sectors in Nepal have been overwhelmed by the rapid spread of infection and are experiencing shortages of important health equipment such as oxygen cylinders, beds and necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).  Anticipating the emergency state of Nepal, Gorkha Zilla Gurung Samaj UK, (Registered charity number 1175191) called on all its members to donate whatever amount they could to help raise fund to buy necessary equipment and PPE for Gorkha district. Within just 4 weeks, the Samaj was able to raise a handsome amount of £3916 from its generous members. Thank you to those who have donated by digging deep into their pockets. The Samaj Trustees agreed to generously donate £2000 form the Samaj fund to the amount already raised to bring the total to £5916 (five thousand nine hundred and sixteen sterling pounds). With the fund raised, the Samaj decided to procure two 10 litres Oxygen Concentrators, three 7 litres Oxygen Concentrators, PPEs, pulse oximeters, masks, sanitizers and thermometers for our home of Gorkha district. The funds have been sent to our trusted people in Gorkha to buy and distribute the goods. The pictures illustrate how are funding is helping our people in Gorkha. It is just remarkable how our small charity has acted so swiftly to raise the fund in such a short span of time to help our people in Gorkha. We hope and pray that the pandemic now sweeping across Nepal will soon be under control thus saving thousands of precious lives.
